This page explains what Solar Guide does with your information. It is written to describe what actually happens on this site, not to cover every eventuality, and we have kept it short enough to be read.
Who we are
Solar Guide is an independent solar equipment research site published at solarguide.pk. We are an online publication based in Lahore, Pakistan, with no retail premises. The way to reach us about anything on this page is info@solarguide.pk.
What we collect
There is no account to create on this site, and you can read every page, use every calculator and compare every product without giving us anything.
The quote form is switched off. We used to run a service that took your requirements and passed them to installers. It is not running at present and the form no longer accepts submissions. What happened to requests sent while it was running is set out below.
Messages you send us. The form on our contact page collects your name, your email address, an optional phone or WhatsApp number, the subject you pick, and whatever you write in the message. It reaches us by email and goes no further.
The installer directory asks for nothing. Reaching a company through the directory works the other way round. You press a button on their page, we show you their number, and you approach them. We do not take your name or your number there. What we do record is set out further down.
Calculator inputs stay in your browser. The figures you enter into our calculators (your bill, your units, your appliances) are processed on your own device and are not sent to us or stored anywhere. We never see them.
Server logs. Like every website, our host records standard technical information about requests: IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used for security and diagnosing faults.
Quote requests we already hold
While the quote service was running, it collected a name, a phone or WhatsApp number, a city, a property type, an average monthly bill, a system type and a timescale, and passed them to installers listed in our directory so they could quote.
If you sent one, those details reached one or more installers at the time. Each of those companies decides how it handles them from that point and its own privacy practices apply. We cannot delete your information from an installer’s records and we do not control what they do with it. If you want a company to stop contacting you, tell that company directly.
You can ask us to delete the copy we hold. Email info@solarguide.pk from the address you used, or tell us the phone number you gave.
When you reveal an installer’s contact details
Pressing Show contact details on an installer’s page does two things besides showing you the number.
- We record that it happened. We store the date and time, which installer it was, the city shown on that page, a short reference code, and a scrambled form of your IP address. The scrambling is one way and cannot be undone, so the record holds no readable address and nothing that names you.
- We email the installer to say somebody asked. That message carries the reference code and the time. It does not carry your name, number, email or address, because we do not have them.
Why. An installer is entitled to see what their listing produced, and we need to be able to settle it if either side disputes a number. What we hold is a count of button presses, not a list of customers.
Pressing the same installer’s button again within six hours is not recorded a second time and sends no second message, so reloading a page cannot inflate anyone’s figure.
About the reference code. The code you are shown, such as SG-4K7P2A, is also placed inside the WhatsApp message we prepare for you. It exists so the installer can see that you came from Solar Guide. It identifies the introduction, not you, and you are free to delete it from the message before you send it.
What happens next is between you and them. The moment you phone, message or email an installer you are handing your details to that company directly, and its own privacy practices apply from then on. We never see that exchange, cannot delete anything from their records and have no say in what they do with it. If you want a company to stop contacting you, tell that company.
If you would rather we recorded nothing, do not press the button. Every installer’s page shows which cities they cover and what work they do without it.
What we do not do
- We do not sell your information to data brokers, marketing lists or anyone else.
- We do not send marketing emails. There is no newsletter and no mailing list.
- We do not build advertising profiles of visitors.
- We do not pass your details to manufacturers.
- We do not pass anything to anyone from the directory, because we do not collect anything there.
- We do not use the contact records for anything except billing installers and settling disputes about a count.
Cookies and third parties
We do not set advertising or tracking cookies, and we do not run analytics that identify you personally.
Google Fonts. Our pages load typefaces from Google’s font service, which means your browser makes a request to Google and Google receives your IP address as part of it. This is the only third-party request a normal page load makes.
WhatsApp links. Several pages offer a WhatsApp button. Pressing one opens WhatsApp and hands Meta a request in the usual way. We do not see that conversation, and nothing happens until you press it.
WordPress, the software this site runs on, may set a functional cookie if you leave a comment or log in. Ordinary visitors browsing the site are not given cookies by us.
Advertising
This site currently carries no advertising. No advertising cookies are set and no ad network receives anything about you today.
We intend to carry advertising in future, and you should know now what that will mean, because it changes the paragraph above rather than replacing it:
- Third-party vendors, Google included, would use cookies to serve advertisements based on your previous visits to this site or to other sites.
- Google’s use of advertising cookies lets it and its partners serve advertisements to you based on your visits here and elsewhere on the internet.
- You can opt out of personalised advertising at any time through Google’s Ads Settings, and out of third-party vendors’ use of cookies at aboutads.info.
- Advertising would never be allowed to change what our comparison tables say, which products appear, or how they are ordered. That is set out on our disclaimer page.
When advertising starts, the first paragraph of this section will say so and this page’s last updated date will change. We will not begin serving ads and leave this saying we do not.
How long we keep things
Quote requests. Kept while they are useful for following up, and for a reasonable period afterwards in case of a dispute about what was requested.
Messages from the contact form. Kept in our email for as long as the matter is open and for a reasonable period afterwards, the same as any other correspondence.
Contact records from the directory. Kept for as long as that installer’s listing runs, and for a reasonable period after it ends, because it is what they are billed on and the evidence if a count is questioned. This record holds no readable IP address and nothing that names you.
Server logs. Retained by our host on their own schedule, typically a matter of weeks.
You can ask us to delete a quote request you sent while that service was running. Email info@solarguide.pk from the address you used, or tell us the phone number you gave, and we will remove our copy. As above, we cannot remove it from an installer’s records. There is nothing to delete from the directory records, because they hold nothing that identifies you.
Your choices
You can ask us what we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Write to info@solarguide.pk and we will respond.
You can browse the whole site without submitting anything. If you would rather not have Google receive a request when you load a page, most browsers and privacy extensions can block third-party font loading.
Children
This site is intended for adults making decisions about property and equipment. We do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has submitted details through our form, tell us and we will delete them.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and we take reasonable steps to protect what we hold. No website can promise perfect security, and we do not.
Changes to this policy
If we start doing something new with your information, such as adding analytics, running advertising or introducing an email list, we will update this page and change the date at the top before that goes live, not afterwards.
