Solar Panels Buying Guide: Types, Prices and What Actually Matters
Panels are the most shopped-for and least understood part of a solar system. Buyers compare wattages the way they’d compare phone specs – bigger number, better panel – while the things that actually decide performance and lifespan go unread on page two of the datasheet. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s panel market mixes genuine Tier-1 stock with re-labelled and B-grade imports, often side by side at the same shop.
This guide gives you the working knowledge to buy well: what the technologies mean, which specs matter, what things should cost per watt, and how to spot the product that isn’t what its sticker says.
Panel types explained
Nearly everything sold in Pakistan today is monocrystalline – the older polycrystalline (blue, speckled) panels are effectively obsolete. Within mono, three terms dominate the market:
Mono PERC. The workhorse of the last decade. Reliable, widely available, and now the budget option as newer tech takes over. Typical efficiency around 20–21.5%.
N-Type / TOPCon. The current mainstream premium. Better efficiency (typically 22–23%), lower degradation year over year, and a better temperature coefficient – which matters more in Multan than it does in Munich. Most new Tier-1 stock entering Pakistan is TOPCon.
Bifacial. Panels with glass on both faces that harvest reflected light from behind. On an elevated structure over a light-coloured roof they can add real output; sandwiched flat against a sheet roof, the second face earns almost nothing. Bifacial is a mounting decision as much as a panel decision.
You’ll also see HJT (heterojunction) appearing at the premium end – excellent numbers, smaller track record in this market.

Specs that actually matter
Four datasheet lines decide whether a panel is good – none of them is the wattage on the sticker:
Efficiency (%). How much roof each watt needs. Higher efficiency means fewer panels for the same output – decisive if your roof is small, irrelevant if it’s huge.
Temperature coefficient (%/°C). Panels lose output as they heat, and Pakistani rooftops in June cross 70°C. A panel rated −0.30%/°C keeps meaningfully more of its output on a hot afternoon than one rated −0.40%/°C. This is the most underrated spec in this market.
Degradation & performance warranty. Good panels guarantee ~87–89% of original output after 30 years. The performance warranty (25–30 years) matters more than the product warranty (typically 12–15 years).
Certifications. IEC 61215 and IEC 61730 at minimum. Their absence from a datasheet is a walk-away signal.
Wattage tells you a panel’s size, not its quality. A 580W panel is not “better” than a 550W one – it’s simply bigger. Compare panels on efficiency, temperature coefficient and warranty, then let price per watt pick the winner.
Brands sold in Pakistan
The market is dominated by Chinese Tier-1 names — Jinko, LONGi, JA Solar, Canadian Solar, Trina — with others (Astronergy, Risen, ZnShine) appearing seasonally as importers’ stock changes. Two honest observations about brands here:
First, among genuine Tier-1 panels of the same generation, the differences are small. A real Jinko TOPCon and a real LONGi TOPCon will perform within a few percent of each other for 25 years. Brand choice matters far less than authenticity and installation quality.
Second, “Tier-1” describes the manufacturer’s bankability, not a specific panel’s grade — which is exactly the loophole grey-market stock exploits. That’s the next section.

Prices and the Rs/W rule
Panel prices in Pakistan move constantly with exchange rates, freight and import policy, so any number printed here would be stale within a quarter. What doesn’t change is how to evaluate a price:
Divide the panel price by its wattage. Rupees per watt is the only fair way to compare a 555W panel at one price against a 585W at another. It instantly exposes overpricing that the sticker wattage hides.
Two market patterns worth knowing: prices usually rise ahead of summer (demand) and soften in winter; and the gap between A-grade documented stock and undocumented stock is real money, if a price looks impossibly good, the discount is the warning.
Pakistan’s market carries significant volumes of B-grade, re-labelled and “used-as-new” panels. Classic tells: prices well below every other quote, invoices that name a wattage but no serial numbers, missing or photocopied “flash test” reports, and sellers who can’t produce the import documentation for that specific batch. A genuine dealer can trace a pallet to its container.
How to choose (and avoid fakes)
A five-check routine before paying for any panel:
Serial numbers – every genuine panel has one; ask for the serials on your panels and verify format with the manufacturer’s site or app where offered.
Flash test report – the factory printout of your specific panels’ tested output. Genuine batches have them.
Import paperwork – dealer should show the batch’s documentation; “company se aya hai” is not paperwork.
Warranty in writing, naming the local warranty channel — a 30-year warranty is worth little if no local entity honours it.
Rs/W sanity check – against at least two other quotes for the same class of panel.
If a seller resists two or more of these, buy elsewhere. The panels are 40–50% of your system cost; this diligence takes one afternoon.
How many panels do you need?
The honest answer is a calculation, not a guess: your monthly units, your city’s sun hours, and the panel wattage you choose determine the count, plus roughly 28 to 33 square feet of roof per modern panel, before the walkway and tilt spacing your installer will need on top of that. As a very rough anchor, a home consuming 500 units a month typically lands in the 5–7kW range – nine to thirteen panels of the current 545–585W class, before your installer tunes it to your roof and usage pattern.
