Solar Installation Guide: Process, Costs and Choosing an Installer

Installation is where a good solar purchase becomes a good solar system – or quietly doesn’t. The panels and inverter you researched so carefully are only half the outcome; the other half is design, wiring, mounting and paperwork done by people you’ll choose in a single meeting.
This guide walks the whole journey – survey to handover – with the costs, timelines and decision points at each step, so no installer ever tells you “this is just how it’s done” without you knowing whether that’s true.

The 8-step process

1-Site survey

A serious installer measures your roof, checks shading through the day, inspects your DB board and asks for your last 12 months of bills. A quote offered without a survey is a guess you’ll pay for.

2-System design

Panel count and placement, inverter selection, string design, protection and earthing plan. Ask to see the layout – you’re allowed to understand it.

3-Quotation

An itemised quote: exact panel and inverter models (not just brands), structure type, cabling specs, what’s included and what’s extra. Compare at least three.

4-Contract & payment terms

Scope, timeline, warranty responsibilities and payment schedule in writing. Standard practice is staged payment – a large upfront share is a risk you don’t need to take.

5-Installation

Typically 2–4 days for a residential system. Structure first, then panels, inverter, wiring and protection. The quality checklist below tells you what to watch.

6-Testing & commissioning

Voltage checks per string, earthing verification, inverter configuration, monitoring app set up on your phone, under your account.

7-Net metering application

8-Handover

You receive: warranty cards, serial numbers, the single-line diagram, test results and the monitoring login. No documents, no final payment.

When one quote is dramatically cheaper, don’t ask “how nice” – ask which bar shrank. Same panel and inverter models but 20% cheaper overall almost always means thinner cables, skipped breakers, a lighter structure or rushed labour. The expensive components are hard to fake; the invisible ones are easy.

Choosing an installer

The market ranges from engineering companies to two-man crews assembled last month. Five condensed red flags (the full field guide gets its own article soon):

  1. Quote without a survey – pricing your roof unseen means someone else’s design.
  2. “Brand X panel” with no model number – vagueness is where B-grade stock enters.
  3. Full or near-full payment upfront – staged payment is standard; deviation is leverage you’re handing over.
  4. No answer for “who honours the warranty?” – a name and address, or walk.
  5. Pressure pricing – “aaj book karein to discount” is a sales script, not an engineering practice.

And the positive signals: an installer who asks questions about your usage, shows you comparable installations you can visit, and puts everything – models, serials, timeline, warranty channel – in writing.

The quality checklist

  • Structure bolted/anchored per design — not resting on bricks
  • Panels clamped at manufacturer-specified points, aligned rows
  • DC cables in conduit or trays — no bare runs across the roof
  • Proper MC4 connectors throughout — no taped joints
  • DC and AC breakers + surge protection installed and labelled
  • Earthing rod installed and bonded; panels and structure earthed
  • Inverter mounted shaded and ventilated, clearances respected
  • Roof penetrations sealed and waterproofed
  • Monitoring app configured on your account, showing live data
  • Warranty cards, serials, diagram and test results handed over

FAQ

The physical installation is usually 2–4 days. End to end – survey to net-metered handover – plan for several weeks, with the DISCO paperwork, not the hardware, setting the pace.

It can save money if you know exactly what you’re buying — but you become the system designer and warranty coordinator. Mismatched components and finger-pointing between sellers and installers is the common failure mode. For most first-time buyers, one accountable installer beats a cheaper split.

Almost any — concrete, sheet and tile all work with the right structure, and elevated structures create usable space below on flat roofs. What actually disqualifies roofs is heavy shading and structural weakness; a proper survey answers both in an hour.

Panel cleaning (monthly-ish in dusty seasons), an occasional glance at the monitoring app, and an annual check of connections and structure torque. It’s genuinely low — but “zero maintenance” sales talk is why dusty panels quietly lose output.

Don’t. Staged payments tied to milestones — booking, delivery, commissioning — are standard and protect both sides. Full upfront payment removes your only leverage over timeline and quality.
